Dog-Assisted Counseling
Feel Comforted During Your Session
Life can be messy, overwhelming, and downright tough sometimes. That’s where Paula Lain Counseling & Co. (PLC) comes in. We’re here to help you navigate the ups and downs with personalized therapy services designed to help you thrive.
At PLC, we’re not about cookie-cutter solutions. We’ll match you with your best-fit therapist – someone who gets you, your goals, and your vibe. If you're not only looking for a human connection, we’ve got therapy dogs ready to lend a paw if needed. Our therapy dogs cannot be moved from session to session because they’re bonded to their helper and your healer. There is a chance that your best-fit therapist doesn’t have a bonded therapy dog to help during the session.
Not a match?
No worries – we welcome you to bring your own well-behaved pup to your session. We follow a strict protocol in engaging all animals within our office and sessions and will help you calmly and safely navigate this when you’re here. We certainly don’t need an indoor dog-park extravaganza of a circus (although fun, this can create some energy that not all animals or humans would love). We’ll walk you through this if you choose this intervention model.
Why do we love this treatment modality? Because, healing feels a little easier with a furry friend by your side.
This isn’t just therapy – it’s a partnership and a fresh start.
Let’s find your path to thriving… together.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT)
Heal from Trauma + PTSD
TF-CBT is one of the most effective evidence-based approaches for treating trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
CBT techniques involve identifying and modifying unhelpful thought patterns that developed as a result of coping with traumatic events, such as childhood abuse, neglect, or violence. TF-CBT helps you identify the connection between distorted thinking and negative reactions or behaviors to change them toward optimal functioning.
If you pursue TF-CBT, we will educate, coach, and teach you new skills to help you heal from trauma and improve your well-being.
Teen | Young Adult Therapy
Safely Navigate Life Changes
Teen therapy provides care and coping mechanisms for teens ages 13–19 who are navigating school, friends, family, stress, activities, hormones, jobs, and other life changes. Parents are superheroes, but they need more support! Our therapists serve as a neutral third party to help teens work through their issues, identify their strengths, and understand it’s okay to not always be okay.
Young adult therapy provides support and practical solutions for young adults ages 20–35 who are facing anxiety, uncertainty, self-doubt, societal pressures, and other negative feelings. But they are bursting with natural strengths! It’s our job as therapists to help young adults see, feel, and use those strengths to their fullest potential.
Whether for you or your child, teen and young adult therapy at PLC offers a safe space for vulnerability, healing, and empowerment.

Systemic Family Therapy
Work Through Family Issues
Systemic family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that helps you better understand and manage your unique family dynamics.
Family therapy involves identifying and improving negative family behavior patterns, often in an interactive process that allows all family members to discuss roles and effectively resolve conflict.
Whether working with individuals or families, our therapists will provide tools to promote problem solving, healthy boundaries, cohesion, communication, and compassion among your family.

Relationship Therapy
Better Understand
You + Your Partner
Relationship therapy helps you safely and confidentially navigate rough patches in your romantic relationship.
Couples therapy involves individual and/or couples sessions to help you and your partner better understand, accept, and communicate with one another. Our goal is to help you address conflict, overcome challenges, and grow in your relationship.
If you are facing issues of partner abuse, violence, or sexual assault, we will offer you individual therapy, as research shows treatment of these dynamics should be done separately from your partner or ex-partner to encourage support, autonomy, and security.

Clinical Supervision
Gain Expertise To
Become a Therapist
PLC is excited to offer clinical supervision and case consultation services for those seeking to become a licensed mental health clinician in South Dakota.
Paula, the owner, will provide weekly independent and group supervision to help you gain expertise toward acquiring the state licensure and certifications required to become a certified social worker (CSW) or licensed professional counselor (LPC).
If you’re on the path to becoming a licensed mental health therapist, we’d love to help you get there!
